Hot Pads

A customer of mine asked me to make six HOT PADS!  Here's how I made it...

First I picked a fabric, and ironed it--with my new homemade starch

Then I clipped the frays on the edge.

Next,I folded the fabric in half, so the right sides are touching. Make sure you cut your pattern on the edge so you can reuse your fabric.

Lay your pattern on the fabric. You can make them as big as you want, just remember to make it big enough for it to lay across your neck.

Make sure to leave about 1/2" away from your base and another 1/2" along one side. Then pin your pattern.

Don't leave the fold on one side Cut out that fold, IT'S CHEATING!  The final piece looks more professional.

Now sew the two long sides and one short side only, leaving the other short side open.

This is what it should look like. Next, turn the fabric right side out.

Now you add the part that gets HOT!  Get a big bowl and put in rice or buckwheat hulls.  I have found that buckwheat hulls hold the scent longer, however, rice stays warm longer.

Then add some essential oil to the rice/hulls. You can make your favorite scent, but I like to use lavender and vanilla. Then stir in the oils and fill 'er up!

Now you can sew your HOT PAD up! Slightly fold in your opening and sew accross the top. Make sure you sew up every opening, so that your filling won't come out.

Now cut the remaining threads, and you have a finished HOT PAD!

You don't have time to do any of this work, or don't have a sewing machine

I will fix you right up for relaxation.

  1. Hi all, Mend It Girl here!
I just wanted to add a tip. I have found that this starch will not last long, since it is made with "fresh" ingredients. So I would either, make just what you need for a week, or add a couple drops of Grape Seed Extract to preserve it. Also, keeping it in the fridge will make it last longer too.
